Sutrisno Hartana, master of Javanese gamelan music, dance, and shadow puppets, performs internationally throughout Asia, Europe, and North America in both traditional and contemporary works. Dr. Hartana attended the Indonesian Dance Conservatory in Java and received his BA in 1992 from the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) in Yogyakarta. In 2004, the King of Paku Alaman garnered him the title Mas Lurah Lebda Swara making him a court musician at the Royal Palace in Java. Dr. Sutrisno Hartana holds his MA in Ethnomusicology from the University of B.C. and a Ph.D from the University of Victoria. He also directs and teaches gamelan at Simon Fraser University; plus collaborating with the Vancouver Community Gamelan Society and leading the Indonesian Consulate General Gamelan Group in Vancouver. Dr. Hartana currently lives with his family in Vancouver.

Gamelan Groups Directed By Sutrisno Hartana
Simon Fraser University Student Gamelan plays on the gamelan instruments donated by the Indonesian government after Expo ’86 called Gamelan Kyai Madu Sari. Sutrisno has taught gamelan to students at SFU for over fifteen years and there is information about their recent performances on this site.

The Busy Island Gamelan Orchestra is Victoria’s first orchestra of this kind, and is dedicated to performing Javanese music and dance. Formed by Mr. Hartana, they performed and gave workshops throughout British Columbia, Canada at arts festivals, schools and other special events including Luminara 2009. Musicians include Anis Astuti, Brendan McGuigan, David Dalzell, Janel Manerikar, Kazuko Sato, Lulu Sukawati, Michael Bodden, Ayundita Batari, Sutrisno Hartana, Ivana Jokic, Daymon Macmillan, Kimberly Shepherd.
