“The Live More Lightly Songbook and Workshop Guide” by Victoria Gibson is a multi-media publication. It is designed to assist teachers, workshop facilitators, environmental groups, workplace initiatives and other social organizations who want to take steps towards reducing their personal impact on the planet.

The workshop is based around the “Live More Lightly Song”, an interactive song that presents the idea of making a personal change in a fun, encouraging way. The workshop leader uses the song to introduce the idea, then each person chooses a personal environmental pledge that they believe will be easy for them to accomplish. Lists of pledges are included in the book if individuals need assistance. Each participant has a turn to share their pledge with the group, they can just say their pledge or sing their own improvised musical line.

The book package contains text and images to help a workshop facilitator or classroom teacher deliver a memorable environmental workshop that asks each participant to do “one small thing” and set a personal environmental goal that is easily attainable. It is Victoria’s belief that if a person experiences success without too much effort, then they may decide to adopt other environmentally friendly habits.

Clear instructions on how to host a workshop outlined in the book are supported with the accompanying materials and music on an enclosed disk. Poster templates, handouts, sign up sheets, newsletter articles, press releases and more are all included in a form that can be customized by the presenter. The disk also includes the song, so the facilitator does not have to sing. The song my be played from the disk and the interactive parts are supplied by the group.

If the facilitator has musical training, they can take advantage of the sheet music supplied and learn to sing the song themselves. A piano accompaniment has been arranged by Eric Hominick and a easy guitar accompaniment by Victoria Gibson.

Victoria is currently delivering workshops and gaining experience so she can write the best instructions possible. She realizes that each situation will be different and flexibility is required, but she hopes to give excellent support to potential workshop presenters with the book.
